Frequently Asked Questions
Access Now is a collaborative program between the Shocker Store, faculty, and publishers. Students enrolled in this program will have access to the required course materials on or before the first day of class. It is designed to be:
- Affordable – most affordable option in the market; through cost savings you can spread your dollar further.
- Convenient – all students have access on/before the first day of class regardless of financial aid status.
- Worry/Hassle Free – materials are located in one location, Blackboard; don’t have to stress over course materials and where you will purchase and if they are the correct materials.
- Accessibility/Study Assistance – all materials meet/exceed standards set forth by the National Federation of the Blind and have study assistance like: audio books, flashcard making, note taking, highlighting, bookmarking and more.
Your course will be identified as an Access Now Course in the online Banner Schedule Search & on the Shocker Store's website.
All Access Now materials are provided digitally through Blackboard. If your instructor requires an access code or additional Interactive or Adaptive courseware (Connect, MindTap, Aplia, Mastering, MyLab) these will also be available through Blackboard, in addition to your digital eBook.
Here are some helpful links about using the following Access Now courseware platforms.
- eBooks - Access Now eBook Tutorial (video)
- McGraw Hill Connect - Connect Student Registration in Blackboard (PDF)
- Cengage Unlimited - How to register for MindTap in Blackboard (web)
- Wiley Plus - Your First Day of Class with Wiley Plus (video)
For information on courseware platforms not listed above, please check your course notes in Blackboard, or contact your instructor.
Prices for the course materials vary based upon what is chosen by your instructor. Most Access Now prices are lower than the cost to access the materials directly from the publisher, with the average cost being 60% less than the new print textbook.
When you enroll in an Access Now course, a course material charge will be added to your student account along with your tuition & fees for the semester.
With a course material charge it provides you, the student, with the choice of opting out & acquiring required materials for your class somewhere else. You have until the opt out deadline to opt out of having the course material charge applied to your student account.
When you opt out of participating in the Access Now program, access to your course materials will be terminated in Blackboard. The course material charge that was applied to your student account will also be refunded. Should you realize after opting out that you wish to opt in, you will have until the 100% refund date to do so to regain immediate access to your materials. This option will be available in Blackboard for the course up until the 100% refund date.
You have the ability to opt out & back in as many times as you want until the deadline.
Log into your course in Blackboard. Look for and click on the Course Materials link on the left side of the page (the exact name of this can vary depending on the instructor). Click on the link which states your course and 'Important Access Now Information Below’, including opting deadlines. Once the new window opens, click on the opt-out bubble. If you experience trouble opting-out, email [email protected]
Simple; visit or email the Shocker Store at [email protected] to make arrangements to purchase your course materials subscription, thus reactivating access to your course materials in Blackboard.
Yes, if you drop your course prior to the 100% refund date your previous charge for the Access Now materials will be refunded.
Courses dropped after the add/drop date are not eligible for a refund.
Most publishers offer a lower price to students for courses that span several semesters. The lower price is intended to prevent students from having to pay for multiple semesters up front if they are only taking a course for one semester. For example, if you take Physics 212 as an Access Now course & will not be taking Physics 313 the next semester, you are only charged for the one semester access instead of two. If you end up taking Physics 313, you simply pay the lower price again for a one semester use.
Yes, if your books are traditionally covered by your 3rd party scholarship, your Access Now materials will also be covered.
No, we have a way to identify students who have purchased one instance of Access Now Cengage Unlimited. Therefore, you will only be charged for the subscription once for the semester regardless of the number of Access Now Cengage Unlimited courses you are registered in. The advantage to this is you may also use the subscription for any other Cengage course you may be taking for the semester as well. To access the materials, simply log into Blackboard and register. When you enter your other classes using Cengage, log in using the credentials you had when you registered, and your materials will be synced for future use in Blackboard. To access materials outside of Blackboard, you will need to log in using your credentials used when registering to obtain access to your Cengage dashboard.
